Project Title: Design-Build Main Switching Station Expansion

Location: JBSA Lackland AFB, San Antonio

Client: 502D Contracting Squadron

Project Value: $2,889,040

CAPITAL maintained the lead on this emergency design/build project entailing the expansion of the existing Main Switching Station located at JBSA Lackland AFB, TX. Due to the increase in Base power requirements/usage, new electrical gear was installed and housed within the addition to the switch station/substation. The main switch station/substation feeds specific areas of the Base including dormitories, offices, training facilities, as well as the critically important hospital, Wilford Hall.

The project required structural construction to extend the existing Main Switch facility to house the new electrical gear. Earthwork entailed the demolition of the existing concrete sidewalks and man holes and the removal of cables from existing ductbanks. Electrical work included the installation of 45 ft main service riser pole with a 1,000 amp horizontal air break-switches, interior light fixtures, and four 1,200 amp sub-feeder breakers. For the existing switchgear cubicles, CAPITAL connected all input cables from the existing digital meters to each new multi meter of the new feeders. Exterior electrical work included installing a 3-way 6 inch duct bank from the existing vault to the new service riser poles, lighting control systems, and control cable for Energy Management and Control System (EMCS) equipment. Mechanical requirements included the installation of a new 5 ton packaged HVAC system and relocation of an existing HVAC system as well as the extension of a fire protection system throughout the new addition.
